Uganda: Milestones under Museveni’s leadership

January 1986 – H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is sworn in as Ugandan president.

December 1994 – Ugandan annual economic growth averages almost 6% in the 1987-1994 period, according to the IMF.

January 1995 – Uganda joins the World Trade Organisation.

1998 – First 2D seismic data acquired in Uganda.

2002-2004 – First deep wells in the Lake Albert area encounter oil and gas.

2007 – FDI net inflows reach a record 6.66% of GDP.

February 2010 – Uganda ratifies the African Union Convention for the Protection and Assistance of Internally Displaced Persons, also known as the Kampala Convention.

December 2012 – Critically endangered mountain gorilla population records 33% growth since 2006 in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

August 2013 – Construction of the 600-MW Karuma Hydroelectric Power Station, projected to be Uganda’s largest power generating infrastructure by 2022, begins.

2014 – Census shows that 32% of population take part in monetary economy, up from 4.6% in 1969. 

November 2018 – Uganda ratifies African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement.

March 2019 – 183-MW Isimba hydropower plant starts commercial operations.

September 2019 – Tourism revenue reaches USD 1.6 billion in the 2018-2019 financial year, making the sector Uganda’s top foreign currency earner for the fifth year in a row.

December 2019 – FDI flows to Uganda reach a record high of USD 1.3 billion.

August 2020 – Uganda joins the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative.

February 2021 – Ugandan 2020 coffee exports reach 5,492,525 60-kilogram bags, seeing highest yearly increase since 1991.

April 2021 – Uganda, Tanzania, TotalEnergies and CNOOC sign key agreements paving the way for EastAfrican Crude Oil Pipeline construction and development of upstream Tilenga and Kingfisher projects.

February 2022 – Uganda, Tanzania, TotalEnergies and CNOOC announce Lake Albert and EACOP projects’ FID.
