Sonamet

Sonamet is a leading Angolan engineering company that provides construction and fabrication for oil and gas structures. Established in 1998 as a joint venture between international offshore services giant Subsea 7, Angola’s NOC Sonangol and Wapo, the company owns a fabrication yard and training centre and handles EPC contracts from its units in Luanda and Lobito.

Yard and equipment: Sonamet’s fabrication yard is located next to the Lobito Port, one of the principal ports on the West African coast due to its length and depth. The yard fabricates a wide range of structures including piping for the regional oil and gas industry.

  • The asset covers an area of 800,000 square metres, with 12,000 square metres of workshops, including four white workshops and two quays.
  • It is fully equipped with fitting, rolling, welding, dredging, and lifting machinery. It has areas dedicated to pipe fabrications, heavy welding, assembly and erection.
  • The yard has 1,700 square metres of indoor storage space and up to 15,600 square metres of uncovered storage space.

Training centre: The company also runs a training facility in line with the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas’ drive to increase local content and improve skills. The centre contains welding and training facilities and three workshop areas covering more than 3,500 square metres. It includes 80 welding boxes and associated equipment.

Strengths: The company excels in shallow-water projects, including fabrication of jackets and topsides. Sonamet also boasts extensive experience in subsea production systems and SURF projects.

Mission: Sonamet aims to actively contribute to the transfer of technology in the Angolan energy industry, with a particular focus on Lobito and the Benguela region.

Current objectives: The local engineering company aims to take on SURF and subsea packages, tie-ins and tiebacks work and similar projects. The company is actively pursuing opportunities in the fabrication of civil structures, especially those that require steel.
