Angola merges oil and mining ministries

Newly-inaugurated Angolan President João Lourenço has combined the portfolios for mining and hydrocarbons in his new Cabinet picks, international media reported Tuesday.

Diamantino Azevedo, former chairman of state-run mining firm Ferrangol, was appointed to serve as minister of mineral and petroleum resources. The move shows President Lourenço’s interest in expanding the country’s mining sector, and may give state-run <a href=’https://theenergyyear.com/companies-institutions/<a href=’https://theenergyyear.com/companies-institutions/sonangol/’>sonangol/’>Sonangol a freer hand in regulating the hydrocarbons industry.

The NOC appointed three new board members last week as part of its ongoing restructuring. Isabel dos Santos, daughter of former President José Eduardo dos Santos, is continuing on as head of the NOC.
