Australia’s Gorgon project begins second phase of production

Chevron has begun producing gas from the second phase of the Gorgon field development project off the coast of Western Australia, the American energy giant announced on Tuesday.

The second phase consisted of adding seven new wells on the Gorgon field, four new wells at the Jansz-Io field, 11 vertical subsea production trees, more than 46 kilometres of production pipelines, 28.7 kilometres of control umbilicals and 2,840 tonnes of subsea structures.

Gas supply is fed to the project’s LNG facility and domestic gas plant on Barrow Island. The three-train LNG facility has a production capacity of 15.6 million tonnes per year.

The Gorgon gasfield is located 130 kilometres off the northwest coast of Western Australia and 65 kilometres from Barrow Island in water depths of around 200 metres.

The project’s first LNG cargo departed in March 2016.

Chevron operates the Gorgon LNG project with a 47.3% stake along with partners ExxonMobil with a 25% stake, Shell with a 25% stake, Osaka Gas with a 1.25% stake, Tokyo Gas with a 1% stake and JERA with the remaining 0.417% stake.

The Gorgon project is Australia’s largest single resource development.
