BP, Shell take on three deepwater plays in Trinidad

Energy giants BP and Shell have signed deals to explore three deepwater blocks in Trinidad and Tobago, Minister of Energy and Energy Industries Stuart Young announced on Thursday.

The consortium agreed to acquire unexplored blocks 25a, 25b and 27.

The work scope under the contracts includes drilling a minimum of three deepwater wells. According to Upstream Online sources, it also includes 3D seismic activities.

The contracts were awarded on September 8, 2023, with an official signing ceremony planned for September 26, 2023.

The government has yet to award Block 23, which was also bid on by the consortium.

BP and Shell are partners in Trinidad and Tobago’s Atlantic LNG facility, with 45% stakes each and state-owned National Gas Company holding the remaining stake.

In April 2023, BP and Shell held a ground-breaking ceremony for Trinidad and Tobago’s first utility-scale solar project.

The renewables project received government approval in December 2022.
