Chevron and CSIRO to study Ceduna

Australia
Chevron and Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, known as CSIRO have teamed up to explore the offshore Ceduna sub-basin, which is located within the larger Bight Basin.

The four-week multimillion-dollar Great Australian Bight Deepwater Marine Programme will be funded by Chevron, but led by CSIRO.

As reported by the Australian minister for industry and science Ian Macfarlane on Monday, the programme will study the geological history of the basin by collecting rock and core samples, as well as analyse distribution of differing species in the area.

The programme will provide a better understanding of the basin’s petroleum potential to reduce offshore exploration risks and costs. Chevron acquired two exploration blocks in the basin – EPP 44 and EPP 45 – in 2013.

Expected to begin in October of this year, geoscientists will utilise autonomous underwater vehicles that will travel to depths of 4,500 metres below the sea surface.
