The Orca Norte-1 well is located 430 kilometres from Barranquilla in water depths of 706 metres.
It was drilled by Noble Corporation’s Noble Discoverer semi-submersible rig.
The Tayrona block is located on the Guajira basin.
The play is Ecopetrol’s first deepwater well on a concession operated directly by the company.
The NOC holds a 56% stake in the concession with Brazilian state-run Petrobras holding the remaining stake.
The timeline for the drilling campaign was not disclosed.
In 2022 the companies made an oil gas discovery at the deepwater Uchuva-1 well on the block.
According to previous projections, Ecopetrol is targeting first gas in 2026 at the development, which will connect to onshore processing facilities via the nearby Chuchupa gasfield.
