Eni says it has halved methane emissions since 2018

Italy
Eni has halved methane emissions compared to 2018 levels, Reuters reported on Wednesday, citing CEO Claudio Descalzi.

The company is targeting a reduction of its methane emissions to close to zero by 2030, having pledged to do so under the Global Decarbonization Accelerator launched at COP28 in December.

The company’s methane emissions totalled 49,600 tonnes of CH4 in 2022.

Eni is among 50 oil and gas companies that pledged to cut methane emissions under the initiative, which calls for near-zero methane emissions in the upstream sector by 2030.

Methane is among the most concerning forms of emissions as it accelerates short-term warming.

The Global Decarbonization Accelerator also calls for net-zero scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by or before 2050.
