Jemena wins NEGI contract

Australia
Energy infrastructure company Jemena won a tender to build the $1-billion Australian North East Gas Interconnector (NEGI) pipeline that will remedy the energy shortage that high gas export volumes may cause by 2018 by incentivising exploration activities in reserves-rich Northern Territory, according to Northern Territory Chief Minister Adam Giles.

NEGI will link the Northern Territory with Queensland, filling a gap in the country’s distribution grid in addition to creating jobs and providing cheaper energy for locals at a targeted price of $6-8 per gigajoule. The project will come online in 2018.

The 622-kilometre, north-south pipeline will supply gas for export operations from the $60-billion LNG projects in Gladstone port, which are scheduled for completion in 2019, as well as the mining industry customers in Queensland.
