The call comes after a report by the National Iranian Oil Company about investment potential in Iran, which, according to the Kuwait News Agency, covered “areas located near the Kuwaiti oilfield.”
Iran’s charge d’affaires was summoned on Sunday and was handed a letter of protest, the report cited an official at Kuwait’s foreign ministry as saying.
“The ministry is taking all necessary measures to protect Kuwait’s interests and rights, and maintain neighbourly ties with all countries of the region,” the official said, adding that there was no change to the status of the offshore field “located within Kuwait’s territorial waters.”
The largest section of the Dorra gasfield, which is not demarcated, is located on the Saudi-Kuwaiti common maritime border. However, part of the asset covers Iranian territory, with relating disputes dating back to the 1960s.
