Oman sets new green hydrogen targets

MUSCAT, October 24, 2022 – Oman aims to ramp up production of green hydrogen to 1 million-1.25 million tonnes per year by 2030 as part of its new hydrogen strategy, the Omani government announced at a press conference on Sunday.

A new state-run company has been created to lead the development, called Hydrogen Oman. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Energy Development Oman.

The initial strategy involves tendering two blocks in Duqm in November 2022 and four blocks in Salalah in April 2023.

The strategy’s greater goal is to produce 7.5 million-8.5 million tonnes per year of green hydrogen by 2050.

An estimated USD 140 billion will be needed to fuel the development.

The Sultanate recently pledged to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
