The strike was organised in response to the laying off of more than 1,600 Omani oil and gas workers since the slump in oil prices began in June 2014.
A panel of Omani ministers participated in talks with the trade union representatives to prevent the industry strike, as exports of around 900,000 barrels of oil per day fuel the country’s economy.
The ministerial committee published a statement last week calling for an increase in Omanisation in oil and gas companies as well as a two-month notice requirement for terminating the contracts for Omani employees of contractors.
There are more than 20,000 Omanis and 2,000 expatriates working in the country’s oil and gas industry.
