Qatar utility inks grid deals

Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) on Sunday signed nine agreements as part of phase 13 of the country’s power transmission system expansion plan.

The contracts, which represent a combined value of USD 2.28 billion, will see international contractors build transmission infrastructure, including 77 substations and 453.3 kilometres of extra high voltage cables.

The latter job will be carried out by South Korean party LS Cable and System, Larsen & Toubro, Japan’s Furukawa and Elsewedy Electric of Egypt.

The substations will be built by Siemens, Larsen & Toubro, Turkey’s Betas, regional entity Galfar and National Contracting Company, operating out of Saudi Arabia.

The next phase of Qatar’s power transmission system expansion plan was set in motion in preparation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

“The projects will … cover a range of industrial sectors, economic zones and logistics areas, in addition to one of the major World Cup stations,” Kahramaa President Essa bin Hilal Al Kuwari said at a press conference on Sunday.

Also present at the signing ceremony, Minister of Energy and Industry Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada said, “The period of implementation of these contracts extends from 16 to 26 months, and were signed with huge and specialised international companies, stressing that these companies will be used in the subcontracts of Qatari companies.”
