Siemens Energy joins Europe’s renewables push

Siemens Energy and its partner have signed a contract worth around USD 7.68 billion to supply transmission technology for a giant renewables project in the North Sea, the global energy technology company announced on Thursday.

Under the contract with Dutch-German transmission systems operator TenneT, Siemens Energy and its partner Dragados Offshore will provide high-voltage direct current transmission systems for the three following grid connections in the German North Sea: BalWin3, LanWin2, and LanWin4.

The three 2-GW assets will transport 6 GW of offshore wind energy to onshore grid connections in northern Germany.

The project’s main electrical components such as switchgears, transformers and converter technologies will be fabricated at Siemens Energy’s European facilities.

Dragados Offshore is responsible for construction and offshore installation of the components.

According to Reuters, the cost of the contract will be divided equally between Siemens Energy and Dragados Offshore.

The deal is part of contracts worth almost USD 33 billion following multiple deals signed in March 2023 to build converter stations and a transmission network in the North Sea to connect 40 GW of offshore wind assets to the Netherlands and Germany.
