US entity to provide tech for Qatar’s NFS project

US gas and chemicals company Air Products has been chosen to provide its proprietary technology for Qatargas’ North Field South project in Ras Laffan, Upstream Online reported on Wednesday.

The scope of the contract includes supply of two new 8-million-tonnes-per-year LNG trains, which is in addition to the four that Air Products is currently building for the sister North Field East project.

The trains utilise the company’s AP-X liquefaction technology.

Engineering and design will be completed at Air Products headquarters in Allentown, Pennsylvania, while equipment manufacturing will be completed at the company’s LNG manufacturing facility in Florida.

“We are very pleased to have our LNG technology selected for the newest liquefaction expansion project in Qatar’s North Field,” said Samir Serhan, COO of Air Products.

“Air Products’ proven AP-X process technology enables significantly higher LNG production while having flexible operation over a wide range of production capacities.”

Cost of the contract was not disclosed.

In April 2023, QatarEnergy signed a deal with Baker Hughes to supply two main refrigerant compressors for the North Field South project.

In October 2022, QatarEnergy announced that ConocoPhillips would join the project with a 6.25% stake, following Shell obtaining a 9.375% stake in the project earlier in October and TotalEnergies taking a similar 9.375% stake in September 2022.

The development is part of the larger North Field expansion project, including North Field South and North Field East.

The entire project aims to produce 48 million tonnes per year of LNG by 2027, pushing Qatar’s overall LNG capacity to around 126 million tonnes per year.
