The projects are spread across 24 states. They range in focus from R&D on the production of electrolysers and securing supply chains for electrolysers to recycling critical materials used in hydrogen production.
A US Department of Energy official told Reuters the approach was “holistic.”
The U.S. National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap, laid out in the country’s 2022 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, targets 10 million tonnes of clean hydrogen production per year by 2030, 20 million tonnes by 2040 and 50 million tonnes by 2050.
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law also outlined a USD 7-billion programme to support the development of seven clean hydrogen hubs.
Numerous green hydrogen projects are underway in the USA, including the production of green hydrogen via solar power, the blending of hydrogen in natural gas supplies, the conversion of power plants to run fully or partially on hydrogen.
“The Biden-Harris Administration is propelling an American-led clean hydrogen economy that is delivering good-paying, high-quality jobs and accelerating a manufacturing renaissance in communities across America,” said US Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm.
