Wafra shutdown could be permanent

A halt in production for maintenance by Chevron at the Wafra oilfield on the border between Kuwait and Saudi Arabia could become a permanent shutdown, Kuwaiti Oil Minister Ali Al Omair said on Tuesday.

The oil minister told the Bloomberg Business news site that a decision would be made on whether or not to continue production after a two-week suspension for servicing.

The Wafra field is located in the Kuwaiti portion of the Partitioned Neutral Zone between Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. It is jointly operated by Saudi Arabian Chevron and the state-owned Kuwait Gulf Oil Company.

“Current difficulties in securing work permits and materials have impacted the company’s operations,” Chevron spokeswoman Sally Jones said in a statement late on Monday. “While efforts continue with all appropriate parties to resolve the issue, Saudi Arabian Chevron and Kuwait Gulf Oil Company are jointly undertaking maintenance shut down at the onshore Partitioned Zone.”
