Warrants issued in Brazil’s Operation Car Wash case

Federal police in Brazil issued 22 new arrest warrants in connection with the major Operation Car Wash corruption case, international media reported Friday.

Nineteen people have been detained, including the main target of the 56th phase of the investigation, César Mata Pires Filho, former vice-president of construction company OAS, local daily O Estado de S. Paulo said on Monday.

Mata Pires Filho, who turned himself in to police last night, is accused of paying bribes to Petrobras directors in relation to the construction of the NOC’s headquarters in Bahia state.

The Operation Car Wash probe has become Brazil’s widest-reaching bribery scandal, involving Petrobras, construction conglomerate Odebrecht and several other oil and gas-related companies, as well as politicians in the country and abroad.
