Alberta signs deal with Enbridge to boost oil exports to USA

EDMONTON, January 6, 2025 – The government of the oil-rich Canadian province of Alberta has signed a deal with Enbridge aimed at boosting exports of heavy crude to the USA, a government official said on Monday.
Alberta has been exporting record levels of oil across the border since the USD 24.7-billion Trans Mountain Expansion (TMX) oil pipeline began operations in April.
A record 4.3 million bopd was being shipped as of June 2024, according to the EIA.
Alberta’s agreement with Enbridge will see a working group established together with government player the Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission to “evaluate future egress, transport, storage, terminalling and market access opportunities” across the company’s expansive network, Premier Danielle Smith said.
The group will work towards the objective of doubling the province’s oil production in alignment with Enbridge’s own plans to grow its existing pipeline system.
The news comes against a backdrop of concern over US President-elect Donald Trump’s threat to impose a 25% tariff on all goods entering the country from Canada.
Last month, Premier Smith said her administration would not impose retaliatory tariffs or halt oil exports.
Calgary-headquartered Enbridge is an energy delivery company active in liquids pipelines, natural gas pipelines, gas utilities and storage, and renewable energy.
The company’s pipeline network spans more than 29,000 kilometres.
