Alaska’s North Slope yields significant oil discovery
HOUSTON, March 18, 2025 – Houston-based E&P company APA Corporation has encountered a high-quality reservoir with approximately 7.6 metres (25 feet) of net oil pay in the Sockeye-2 exploration well in Alaska’s North Slope, the company announced on Monday.
Sockeye-2 is located in the Lagniappe area east of Prudhoe Bay. The project is a joint venture between APA Corporation, which holds a 50% interest, and Lagniappe Alaska and Santos, which have 25% each.
Wireline logging is complete and additional data collection is underway, including acquiring core and flow testing the well. APA noted that results from Sockeye were better than expected and confirmed geologic and geophysical models of the area, thus de-risking numerous additional prospects in the surrounding acreage.
“We are very encouraged by the results at the Sockeye-2 well, which further proves our geologic and geophysical models and confirms a working hydrocarbon system. We look forward to the results of the flow test and sharing more information about the broader opportunity in Alaska,” said John J. Christmann, CEO of APA Corporation.
