Eni launches production from Indonesia’s Merakes East offshore gasfield
JAKARTA, May 14, 2025 – Eni has launched gas production from the Merakes East field in the Kutei basin offshore Indonesia, expected to deliver around 18,000 boepd, the company said on Tuesday.
Merakes East is situated in 1,600 metres of water in the East Sepinggan block, around 10 kilometres from the original Merakes field. The site is linked to the Jangkrik floating production unit (FPU) via subsea tieback. Gas from Merakes East will be processed at the FPU and transported through a pipeline network to serve Indonesia’s domestic market and the Bontang liquefaction plant.
The development, completed around two years after final investment decision, exemplifies Eni’s fast-track project strategy and strengthens its position in the Kutei Basin. “The start-up of Merakes East is another important step of Eni’s broader strategy to valorize the considerable gas resources held in Indonesia’s prolific Kutei Basin,” Eni said.
With further developments including the Maha field and recently approved plans for the Northern Hub and Gendalo-Gandang projects, Eni is targeting production of up to 2 bcf per day of gas and 90,000 bopd of condensate. The company is also in discussions with Petronas for a joint venture across Indonesia and Malaysia, with combined reserves of 3 billion boe and 10 billion boe of exploration potential.
Eni, active in Indonesia since 2001, operates a wide portfolio of exploration, development and production assets with current production of around 700 mcf per day in East Kalimantan.
