Deep local knowledge
February 4, 2025Marianela Manrique, president of Matzu, talks to The Energy Year about how investment in Colombia’s energy industry has evolved recently, how the company is facilitating the entry of new investors in the country and challenges faced by those making local energy investments.
How has the investment climate in Colombia’s energy industry evolved over the past two years?
In the last two years, Colombia’s energy industry has shown significant development, in the commitment to the energy transition and developing electricity grids. These factors have made the country increasingly attractive to foreign investors. Niches that are generating the most interest include renewable energy, particularly solar, and the development of natural gas infrastructure. In addition, sustainable mining projects with reverse economics and energy efficiency initiatives are also attracting investor attention.
What role has Matzu played in attracting and facilitating the entry of new investors in the country?
Matzu has played a key role in Colombia’s energy industry, being a crucial facilitator for the entry of new investors into the country. We have worked tirelessly to create a favourable environment for foreign investment, serving as a bridge between local opportunities and international capital. Our experience in identifying opportunities, coupled with a deep understanding of the regulatory framework, has allowed investors to trust us to navigate the Colombian market efficiently and safely.
We are currently involved in solar energy projects, reverse economics with magnesium silicate mining, power grids and gas.
What are the main challenges and bottlenecks investors interested in developing energy projects in Colombia face?
One of the most notorious challenges facing investors in Colombia is obtaining permits, which can be a lengthy and complex process. In addition, infrastructure in some areas can be limited, which adds an extra layer of difficulty to energy projects. Access to finance also presents challenges, especially for large projects.
At Matzu, we help our clients overcome these hurdles by providing comprehensive advice on topics ranging from permitting to liaising with financial institutions, ensuring that each stage of the project is handled as efficiently as possible.
What are some of the flagship energy projects in which Matzu is actively involved?
Matzu is involved in several key projects in Colombia, all of which reflect our focus on sustainability and innovation. These include solar energy projects, where we are leading initiatives to increase the country’s installed capacity in renewable energy.
We are also deeply involved in the development of natural gas infrastructure, a key resource for Colombia’s energy transition. In addition, we have a particular interest in sustainable magnesium silicate mining projects that align economic needs with environmental stewardship.
What kind of investments and investors are you looking to attract to Colombia? What kind of guarantees does Matzu provide to potential investors?
We are focused on attracting investors who are aligned with the principles of sustainability and who seek to have not only a financial return but also a positive impact on the development of Colombia. Matzu offers significant added value through our deep knowledge of the local market, our strategic networks, and a proven track record of success in facilitating investments in complex sectors. We guarantee our investors constant support, from initial planning to project execution, ensuring that each investment is backed by rigorous analysis and sound strategy.
What are Matzu’s short- and medium-term objectives?
In the short term, Matzu is committed to consolidating our position in the Colombian energy market by expanding our portfolio of renewable energy and natural gas projects, primarily. In the medium term, our goal is to become a recognised leader in facilitating sustainable investments, not only in Colombia, but also in other emerging markets in the region.
We are working to develop new strategic alliances and explore growth opportunities that are in sync with the global challenges of energy transition.
