Companhia do Pipeline Moçambique-Zimbabwe (CPMZ) operates the fuel pipeline linking the port of Beira to Feruka in Zimbabwe. The company is a PPP between the Mozambican government and Sociedade Moçambicana de Investimentos, which represents private investors and is responsible for operational oversight.

CPMZ’s pipeline transports refined products offloaded at Beira port over a distance of about 290 kilometres, following the course of a national road. The fuel is supplied under an operating agreement signed with the Zimbabwean government.

The pipeline’s current capacity stands at about 3 mcm per year, with the company carrying out an expansion plan that includes the installation of two additional satellite stations and a gradual plan to increase flow and bring baseline capacity to 5 mcm per year.

Together with the pipeline, CPMZ operates two pumping platforms in Beira and Maforga, as well as the reception terminal at the interconnection point in Feruka. Operations are monitored in real time using SCADA [supervisory control and data acquisition] software and modern telemetry systems that support decision making and critical event management.

In 2021, CMPZ signed a MoU with the government of Zimbabwe formalising Project Cobalt, which contemplates extending CMPZ’s pipeline to Harare and establishing a distribution hub to service Southern Africa’s landlocked hinterland, including high-growth markets in Zambia, Malawi, Botswana and Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Project Cobalt also contemplates erecting dedicated tank farms for the fuel destined for the hinterland, as well as a reformulation of programming, nomination and injection processes for refined products at the source, which will increase the competitiveness of CMPZ’s transport network over road haulage.

CMPZ is a certified operator that meets safety and environmental protection requirements and standards set by relevant national and international authorities.
