ADNOC drills world’s first carbon dioxide injection well

ABU DHABI, July 21, 2023 – ADNOC has drilled the world’s first fully sequestered carbon dioxide injection well, the Emirati NOC announced via social media on Thursday.

The well uses carbon dioxide captured by nitrogen fertilizer and ammonia producer Fertiglobe, a joint venture between ADNOC and OCI.

ADNOC is currently moving towards the wells operational phase.

In January 2023, ADNOC allocated USD 15 billion towards decarbonisation projects by 2030.

The company aims to have 5 million tonnes per year of carbon capture capacity by 2030.

A large scope of decarbonisation efforts will come through ADNOC’s stake in Emirati clean energy player Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company or Masdar, which it purchased in December 2022.
