ADNOC Gas in world-first deployment of carbon-to-graphene tech

ABU DHABI, January 16, 2025 – ADNOC and energy technology company Baker Hughes have completed the first-ever deployment of LOOP decarbonisation technology at an operational gas processing facility, namely the Habshan Gas Processing Plant in the UAE, ADNOC announced on Thursday.

Developed by British climate technology firm Levidian, LOOP is a pre-combustion system that captures carbon from methane, the main constituent of natural gas, and transforms it into graphene and hydrogen. The unit installed at Habshan will be able to produce more than 1 tonne per year (tpy) of graphene and 1 tpy of hydrogen in a first phase.

By transforming methane into valuable graphene and clean hydrogen, we are unlocking new value from natural gas, driving decarbonisation and supporting the UAE’s industrial growth and climate ambitions,” said Mohamed Al Hashemi, COO of ADNOC Gas.

Data collected during the pilot will be used towards the development of AI models and digital twins to maximise graphene output from future installations. ADNOC Gas’s current plans foresee potential expansions that could yield up to 15 tpy of graphene and clean hydrogen at the site.

Graphene and hydrogen are high-value commodities that can play an important role in the energy transition. Hydrogen is gaining ground as an alternative to fossil fuels and graphene serves as an input in the production of solar panels and batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage facilities, among other applications.
