Argentina to export gas to Chile in 2018

Largely due to rising production from Vaca Muerta, Argentina will likely begin gas exports to Chile before the end of the year, the countries’ energy ministers said on Thursday at the G20 meeting of energy chiefs.

The comments were related to unrestricted exports and imports of gas, without the need for swaps, as has been the case with recent energy exchanges between the two countries. Chilean Minister of Energy Susana Jiménez said import deals are under discussion and gas flows could begin in October or November.

“This summer we will start to sign permits for exporting natural gas to Chile without any restrictions,“ said Argentine Minister of Energy and Mining Juan José Aranguren.

Earlier in the week at the Latin American Energy Forum, Minister Aranguren told participants that the country could soon become a net hydrocarbons exporter, with regular oil exports starting in 2020 and gas exports in 2021.
