Cheniere reaches FID on Corpus Christi LNG expansion

HOUSTON, June 25, 2025 – Houston-based LNG producer and exporter Cheniere Energy has reached a positive FID on the Corpus Christi Midscale Trains 8 & 9 and Debottlenecking Project and has issued full notice to Bechtel Energy to proceed with construction, Cheniere announced on Tuesday.

The new trains and debottlenecking infrastructure will be built adjacent to Cheniere’s Corpus Christi Stage 3 Project and will add approximately 5 million tonnes per year (tpy) of LNG liquefaction capacity, bringing the terminal’s total capacity to more than 30 million tpy upon completion.

As a result of the expansion and debottlenecking, Cheniere has raised its overall production outlook across its Sabine Pass and Corpus Christi terminals by more than 10% to more than 60 million tpy.

Cheniere is planning further brownfield expansions in phases at both terminals, potentially increasing capacity to approximately 75 million tpy by the early 2030s. The company is following a capital allocation programme that calls for USD 20 billion in capital deployments by 2026.

Bechtel Energy was recently awarded a USD 4.3-billion EPC contract by NextDecade for the fifth liquefaction train at the Rio Grande LNG facility in Brownfield, Texas. The award follows an August 2024 EPC contract for the facility’s fourth train, valued at USD 4.8 billion.
