Cheniere to supply LNG to France

USA

HOUSTON, October 30, 2015 – US LNG supplier Cheniere has struck a five-year LNG deal with Engie, the French utility announced in a Wednesday company statement.

The newly signed deal stipulates that Cheniere will supply as much as 12 cargoes of LNG yearly from the company’s US terminals to Engie’s Montoir de Bretagne regasification terminal in France starting in 2018.

The deal reaffirms France as a significant market for US LNG export and will add to Europe’s energy mix, as a third of European gas is currently supplied by Russia from its Siberian fields.

Earlier this year, Cheniere struck a deal with French electric utility Electricite de France for up to 50 LNG cargoes per year and with power generation company EDF to supply up to 50 cargoes yearly.

The additional LNG supplied to France will come from nine liquefaction terminals in the Sabine Pass terminal in Louisiana and the Corpus Christi terminal in Texas. The terminals are slated to begin producing LNG at the end of 2015 and in 2018, respectively. According to Cheniere, both terminals will produce 9 million tonnes of LNG per year.
