China emerges as top US buyer

HOUSTON, April 5, 2017 – China has overtaken Canada to become the biggest purchaser of US crude, figures released on Tuesday indicate.

 

The US sent 8.08 million bopd of light crude to China during February, the U.S. Census Bureau said. Canada imported 6.84 million bopd in the second month of the year. In total, the US shipped a record 31.2 million barrels of oil that month, a surge of 35% over January.

Other major Asian buyers were Singapore, Japan and South Korea.

The Netherlands bought more than 2 million barrels during February, with half going to its Caribbean constituent country Curacao. Italy imported in excess of 1 million barrels, the U.S. Census Bureau figures also showed.
