China sets high goals for building clean-fuel vessels

China

BEIJING, December 29, 2023 – China has set a goal to produce more than half the world’s vessels powered by clean fuels by 2025, Reuters reported on Thursday.

The move aims to heighten production of low-carbon vessels that use fuels such as methanol and LNG and complete the environmental reworking of the local shipping industry by 2030.

The number of vessels expected to be built was not disclosed in the government’s published guidelines.

The initiative falls under China’s goal to become carbon neutral by 2060.

According to the International Energy Agency, international shipping contributed to around 2% of carbon dioxide emissions in 2022.
