Energy Transfer halts Lake Charles LNG project in USA

LAKE CHARLES, December 19, 2025 – Energy Transfer has suspended development of its Lake Charles LNG export project in the US to prioritise pipeline infrastructure investments, the company said on Thursday.

A report from Reuters noted that Energy Transfer’s decision marks the first LNG project suspension since permits were expedited by the Trump administration in January. The move comes amid rising project costs and concerns over a potential global oversupply as new LNG capacity comes on line.

The Lake Charles LNG project, located on the US Gulf Coast, was designed to produce up to 16.5 million tonnes per year and aimed to reduce construction costs and timelines by leveraging existing infrastructure. The facility was being developed by Energy Transfer LNG, a subsidiary of Energy Transfer.

Energy Transfer owns and operates one of the largest energy infrastructure networks in the US, with around 140,000 miles of pipeline across 44 states. Its operations span natural gas midstream, intrastate and interstate transport and storage, as well as crude oil, NGLs and refined product infrastructure.
