Drilled to a depth of 3,500 metres, the well reached a net oil pay of 110 metres. About 65 metres of the oil pay was located in a deep reservoir and is light oil. The rest, with oil gravity of 18 degrees API, was discovered in a shallower Pliocene reservoir. Drilling began in January 2017.
Eni is now planning to continue its USD 245-million appraisal programme, which includes the drilling of Amoca-3, Miztón-2 and Tecoalli-2 in 2017.
The Italian major is a recent entrant into Mexico’s newly liberalised hydrocarbons industry. The company participated in Round 1.2 in October 2015 and was awarded a PSC for Contract Area 01, which includes the Amoca, Miztón and Tecoalli fields. The block’s total 2P reserves are estimated to be 107 million barrels of light crude and 1.95 bcm (68.9 bcf) of gas.
Amoca-2 is not only Eni’s first well in Mexico, but also the first well to be drilled in the country by a major foreign company. Following the passage of Mexico’s energy reform in 2014, the country has made a concerted effort to attract foreign players throughout the domestic oil and gas value chain.
In the upstream sector, these efforts have been reflected in the successful Round 1 tenders that took place in 2015 and 2016, and now with the Round 2 bidding process, scheduled to begin in June 2017.
