Equinor secures offtake for 810-MW New York wind project
NEW YORK CITY, June 5, 2024 – Equinor has secured an offtake deal for its 810-MW Empire Wind 1 project offshore New York City, the Norwegian company announced on Wednesday.
A purchase and sale agreement was reached with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority for the offtake of power from the project.
First power prom Empire 1 is expected in late 2026.
In February, the state of New York said it had awarded the project for contract negotiation to Equinor following its fourth offshore wind solicitation.
Empire Wind 1 is poised to power 500,000 New York homes with renewable energy. The project includes the transformation of the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal into a staging and assembly area for the project. The terminal can then serve as a hub for future offshore wind projects.
Molly Morris, president of Equinor Renewables Americas, called the development a “defining project for Equinor.”
