EU approves $3.9 billion for Romania wind and solar

Romania
The European Commission has approved an aid package totalling USD 3.9 billion to support onshore wind and solar projects in Romania, PV Magazine reported on Friday.

The funding will be available to future projects involving the construction and operation of new PV and onshore wind installations. It will be given via competitive bidding procedures, which will determine the strike price.

While hydropower ranks first among Romania’s renewable energy sources, wind is also key, supplying 12.56% of the country’s electricity as of 2023, according to EI. Around 3.02 GW of capacity was installed as of end-2022, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

The country’s greatest wind potential is found in the Black Sea regions around Constanța and Tulcea.

Meanwhile, Romania had 1.8 GW of solar capacity installed by end-2022, according to IRENA. The country’s highest solar potential is found on the Black Sea coast and in Northern Dobruja and Oltenia.
