France’s TotalEnergies and Veolia join forces on low-carbon innovation

PARIS, October 6, 2025 – TotalEnergies and Veolia have signed a memorandum of understanding to expand co-operation on energy transition and the circular economy in France, the companies said on Monday.
The agreement will combine Veolia’s expertise in water resource management and waste recovery with TotalEnergies’ capabilities in methane emissions monitoring and low-carbon energy production.
Veolia is assessing the deployment of TotalEnergies’ AUSEA drone-based methane measurement technology across its landfills, targeting an 80% methane capture rate by 2032.
TotalEnergies will be supported by Veolia to reduce its freshwater withdrawals by 20% by 2030 at water-stressed sites and to develop municipal wastewater reuse solutions.
The partners will also collaborate on making desalination more sustainable by using low-carbon energy, building on a previous solar-powered desalination project in Oman.
Additionally, both companies will explore the industrial recovery of strategic elements from waste, such as rare earths used in renewable energy technologies.
“We are putting our innovation capabilities at the service of the ecological transformation and the competitiveness of our industries,” Veolia chief executive officer Estelle Brachlianoff said.
“Together, we can make a concrete contribution to the energy transition and the circular economy,” TotalEnergies chairman and CEO Patrick Pouyanné said.
TotalEnergies is a global multi-energy company active in over 130 countries, involved in oil and gas production, refining, petrochemicals, and low-carbon energy solutions including solar, wind and hydrogen. In France, the company is accelerating efforts to reduce emissions and freshwater usage across its industrial sites.
Veolia operates worldwide in water management, waste recovery and energy services. It is expanding its desalination capacity and developing technologies to reduce the environmental impact of industrial processes.
