Germany, Morocco form green hydrogen alliance

BERLIN, June 28, 2024 – The governments of Morocco and Germany will form an alliance to support the development of renewable energies and green hydrogen, Reuters reported on Friday.
The deal, announced by German’s minister of development, will give the country access to Morocco’s expanding hydrogen production, allowing it to step up imports of the fuel as it targets a net-zero economy by 2045.
Lacking the available land to develop the renewables installations needed for green hydrogen production, Germany will need to import up to 70% of its hydrogen demand in the future, the report said.
In March, the Moroccan government said it would allocate 1 million hectares, around 10,000 square kilometres, to green hydrogen projects.
In a statement on the alliance, German Minister of Development Svenja Schulze said her country aims to approach the sourcing of hydrogen as a partnership, ensuring Morocco benefits.
“We want to do this fairly and in partnership, so that Morocco can also drive forward its energy transition and get its fair share of the value chains of the future,” she said.
