Ghana mulls turning refinery to tank farm
ACCRA, May 11, 2018 – Ghana’s Ministry of Energy is considering converting the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) into a tank farm, local media reported Friday.
Management at the refinery has objected to the change, citing the recent addition of a catalytic cracker expected to begin operations this weekend.
“Additional refineries are welcome and the government is right to ensure that we have new refineries in this country […] but at the same time, we must not lose sight of the fact that we have trained, experienced, competent individuals working as engineers and technicians in present-day TOR. These are national assets which must be protected,” CEO Isaac Osei was quoted as saying by Myjoyonline news portal.
While TOR produces below capacity, a new refinery with much higher capacity is planned. TOR has a storage capacity of 1 million tonnes of crude and finished petroleum products.
