Halliburton, Coterra launch autonomous hydraulic fracturing

HOUSTON, January 7, 2025 – Halliburton Energy Services and Coterra Energy have launched the first autonomous hydraulic fracturing technology in North America, the companies announced on Tuesday.

The deployment of the Octiv Auto Frac service, part of Halliburton’s ZEUS electric fracturing platform, makes Coterra the first operator to fully automate and control hydraulic fracturing design and execution.

Prior to introducing the technology, fracturing decisions were managed manually during pumping.

Coterra is a Houston-based exploration and production company with operations focused in the Permian Basin, Marcellus Shale and Anadarko Basin.

 

“The deployment of intelligent automation for hydraulic fracturing helps us execute stages consistently and provides us with more autonomy and control over the completion process,” Coterra CEO Tom Jorden said.

After seeing a 17% increase in stage efficiency in the initial deployment, Coterra will now put the technology in place at all of its Permian operations run with Halliburton.

Halliburton described the technology as a game-changer in oilfield services.

“Octiv Auto Frac changes the game of completion performance,” vice-president of production enhancement Shawn Stasiuk said.

“The service ensures that automation delivers consistent fracture execution every stage while giving our customers the control they demand over their assets. The Octiv Auto Frac service is the first system to deliver on this promise.”
