India to use LNG for one-third of long-haul trucks
NEW DELHI, September 9, 2024 – The government of India targets the use of LNG to fuel one-third of its long-haul trucking fleet within five to seven years, Reuters reported on Monday.
The plans were described as a loss for the diesel sector, as well as a gain for emissions reduction efforts. The government pointed to a 24% drop in emissions in the switch from diesel to LNG.
The report cited a draft policy document from the country’s Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
The policy envisions a first phase in which 49 LNG dispensing stations will be set up around India. It also said the government aims to maintain a consistent LNG price throughout the country.
The government sees LNG as a preferred option over CNG for long-haul trucks, the report said.
India had around 5.8 million trucks and lorries and 1.6 million multi axle articulated vehicles registered as of March 31, 2020, according to the draft policy.
