The pipeline carries almost 10 bcm (353 bcf) of Iranian gas to Turkey annually, making Iran Turkey’s second-largest natural gas supplier after Russia. Even though the gas flows have been restored, it remains unclear if the pipeline is working at capacity.
This explosion comes after Turkey’s recent airstrikes in northern Syria in response to an Islamic State suicide bomber killed 32 people close to the Turkey-Syrian border on July 20.
The Turkish press has speculated that the Kurdistan Worker’s Party was responsible for the explosion, although no one has claimed to be responsible for the attack.
