Mangrove Lithium launches pioneering refinery in Canada
Canada DELTA, April 16, 2026 – Refining technology company Mangrove Lithium has opened North America’s first commercial electrochemical lithium refining facility in Delta, British Columbia, the company announced on Wednesday.
The plant will convert extracted lithium into battery-grade material and is designed with a nameplate capacity of 1,000 tonnes per year of lithium, which the company expects will support the production of about 25,000 electric vehicles per year.
“By commissioning the first commercial electrochemical lithium refinery in North America, we are proving that lithium can be refined domestically, sustainably, and competitively. This facility is an important step towards a fully Canadian lithium supply chain, one that strengthens our energy security, accelerates the transition to EVs, and positions Canada as a global leader in critical mineral processing,” said Saad Dara, founder and CEO of Mangrove Lithium.
The company is also advancing plans for a spodumene processing and lithium refining facility in Eastern Canada, for which it has secured CAD 21.88 million in contribution funding from Natural Resources Canada for engineering and spodumene piloting studies. The planned operation is targeting to supply inputs to support about 500,000 electric vehicles per year.
Mangrove Lithium specialises in electrochemical lithium refining to produce battery-grade lithium materials in Canada. It is backed by Canada Growth Fund, Breakthrough Energy Ventures and Mitsubishi, among other investors.
