Meta to offtake all output from ENGIE’s 260-MW solar plant in USA
TEMPLE, October 31, 2024 – Meta, the owner of Facebook, will purchase all output from ENGIE’s planned Sypert Branch solar plant in the USA, the French company told Reuters on Thursday.
The Sypert Branch plant is situated 16 kilometres from Meta’s data center in Temple, Texas.
It is expected to come on line next year.
“Once operational, it will add to the existing ENGIE portfolio of around 8 GW of renewable projects including solar, wind and battery storage in operation or construction across North America,” the company told the agency.
ENGIE North America’s chief renewables officer and senior vice-president, Dave Carroll, released a statement on the deal.
“We are delighted to announce this agreement to work with Meta by providing renewable power that supports their growth and aligns with their net-zero commitments,” he said.
Meta, formerly Facebook Inc., achieved net-zero carbon emissions across its global operations in 2020, mainly by powering its data centres and offices with renewable energy.
ENGIE had 1 GW of solar projects installed across North America as of end-2022.
The USA saw a surge in new power generation capacity in the first half of this year as the use of AI expanded, along with the need for data centres.
