Mexico aims for 2018 unconventionals auction

Mexico could hold an auction for shale oil and gas blocks before the end of the year, the president commissioner of the country’s oil and gas regulator said on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters after the close of the successful Round 2.4 deepwater auction, Juan Carlos Zepeda of the National Hydrocarbons Commission (CNH) said that the regulator is waiting for approval from the Secretariat of Energy so that it can open a tender for shale resources.

“We are waiting for the ministry of energy to establish the specific schedule […] to award the blocks before the end of this year,” Zepeda was quoted as saying by Reuters.

The auction would likely offer areas in Mexico’s Burgos Basin, which contains part of what in the USA is the Eagle Ford formation. According to Zepeda, blocks in the states of Veracruz and Tamaulipas, as well as the Tampico-Misantla Basin, would also be offered.
