NextEra advances 250-MW Texas solar plant
ATLANTA, April 30, 2026 – Graphic Packaging has signed a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with NextEra Energy Resources that will support the construction of a 250-MW solar plant in West Texas, Graphic Packaging announced on Wednesday.
NextEra Energy Resources is developing the 250-MW Selenite Springs Energy Center project within the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) market, with commercial operations expected to begin at the end of 2027.
Under the VPPA, power generated by the new plant will be sold to ERCOT, and Graphic Packaging will be the sole buyer of the facility’s renewable energy attribute certificates Graphic Packaging expects the deal will cover approximately 43% of its 2025 power consumption in the US and Canada, raising the share of purchased renewable electricity to about 49% of its total global consumption, and reducing global Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by about 20% from its 2021 baseline.
“By sourcing renewable electricity for nearly half of our global electricity needs, we are better positioned to support our customers in making progress toward their sustainability goals,” said Graphic Packaging chief sustainability officer Michelle Fitzpatrick.
Graphic Packaging designs and produces consumer packaging made mainly from renewable or recycled materials for food, beverage, foodservice, household and other consumer brands. NextEra Energy Resources is a major US clean energy developer with renewable energy, battery storage and power generation assets.
