Nigerian Navy deploys 16 ships to oil facilities

The Nigerian Navy has deployed 16 newly-inaugurated ships to the Niger Delta and Gulf of Guinea to guard oil installations, local media reported Tuesday.

The deployment is intended to protect economic activities in the areas, This Day reported.

“For a littoral state with a huge dependence on her offshore resources, maritime security is vital to the nation’s wellbeing. Against this background of threats, the entire nation will invariably be at a risky situation if we do not insist on a motivated and virile navy like ours,” Minister of Defence Mansur Dan-Ali said.

While piracy has decreased internationally, the Gulf of Guinea continues to be targeted. A tanker and its 19-person crew went missing offshore Gabon last month.
