Norway reconsiders Barents Sea gas pipeline

Norway
A state-endorsed study has revealed that an export pipeline in Norway’s Barents Sea is the most viable option for transporting gas from the region to Europe, Reuters reported on Monday.

In March 2023, the Norwegian government tasked Norwegian state-owned gas infrastructure company Gassco to assess options for raising transport of gas to Europe as demand rises.

The study also evaluated the possibility of increasing LNG capacity and converting gas to carbon-free ammonia for shipment.

Currently, gas is exported solely via Equinor’s Hammerfest LNG facility located on the island of Melkøya outside of Hammerfest, Norway.

The Nordic country is now the largest supplier of gas to Europe following sanctions on Russian gas imports.

Traditionally, Norway’s largest producers – Equinor, Aker BP and Vår Energi – have focused on producing oil in the region instead of gas. However, exploration campaigns have discovered significant gas deposits.
