Oman launches largest solar desalination project

SUR, November 6, 2023 – Oman’s largest solar PV desalination plant was inaugurated on Monday, a milestone for what project developer Veolia has called “a reference desalination plant for the Gulf region.”

The 17-MWp solar farm will fully power the Sharqiyah Desalination Plant, located south of Muscat in the country’s eastern coastal city of Sur.

The solar project was developed by Veolia – which together with local player Bahwan Engineering Company operates the Sharqiyah Desalination Plant – alongside partner TotalEnergies.

Its inauguration was attended by Minister of Energy and Minerals Salim bin Nasser al Aufi, who termed the project “one of the significant contributors to water security in Oman.”

The desalination plant processes more than 200,000 cubic metres of seawater daily for an output of 18,000 cubic metres of potable water for the Sharqiyah region, addressing the area’s depleted groundwater resources. More than 600,000 people are served by the plant.

French-headquartered Veolia is a global provider of optimised water, waste and energy management solutions.  It provides critical services for mitigating the impacts of climate change and making efficient use of energy and water resources.
