Oman launches local RO membrane manufacturing plant
MUSCAT, April 12, 2025 – Oman has inaugurated its first reverse osmosis (RO) membrane manufacturing plant, marking a significant step towards industrial self-reliance and water sustainability.
The facility, developed by local start-up Tasnee, is the culmination of four years of research, real-world testing and innovation. The plant aims to reduce the Sultanate’s dependence on imported membranes and aligns with Oman Vision 2040’s goals of economic diversification and technological advancement.
After numerous iterations and continuous fine-tuning, the final membrane formula was stabilised over a nine-month success streak. The membrane now demonstrates strong rejection rates, durability in harsh conditions and optimal efficiency for seawater desalination, municipal and drinking water applications.
“It’s easy to assume membrane production is straightforward, but the reality was full of challenges,” said Salim Abdulla al Wahebi, founder and CEO of Tasnee. “We had to build everything from the ground up – from the right formula and raw materials to performance testing and field trials.”
This achievement reinforces Oman’s growing reputation as a regional leader in sustainable water solutions. The RO membrane is being leveraged as a key contributor to Oman’s In-Country Value strategy, replacing imported alternatives and strengthening national capability. Tasnee is currently focused on local utilisation, with plans to expand across the GCC region and eventually into international markets.
