Oman’s Salalah 2 plant comes on line

MUSCAT, March 9, 2018 – Oman’s USD 465-million Salalah 2 Independent Power Plant was inaugurated on Thursday, international media reported.

The plant, which began commercial operations at the start of 2018, was brought on line by a consortium of Japan’s Mitsui, Saudi’s ACWA Power and Oman’s Dhofar International Development and Investment Holding Company.

The greenfield project will add 445 MW to Oman’s generation capacity. Its four gas turbines and four heat recovery steam generators have a 30-year lifecycle.

ACWA Power president and CEO Paddy Padmanathan said the plant was launched ahead of schedule, while Dhofar CEO Naef bin Mohammad Al-Awaed said power would be sold to Oman Power and Water Procurement Company under a 15-year purchase agreement.
