OMV Petrom announces new gas discovery in Romania
Romania CRAIOVA, July 3, 2025 – OMV Petrom has discovered a new natural gas reservoir in southern Romania, the company said on Thursday.
The find is located in Spineni, around 70 kilometres north-east of Craiova, where the 1 Spineni well was drilled to around 4,800 metres and confirmed the presence of natural gas and condensate through production testing. The well demonstrated a daily output potential of 180,000 cubic metres of gas and 25 cubic metres of condensate, or a total of 1,300 boepd.
The prospect was identified using data from a 3D-seismic survey conducted in 2022 in the X Craiova block.
Testing has confirmed commercial viability and the next step is to obtain approval for the development plan. OMV Petrom has already invested around EUR 15 million in the exploration phase of the onshore project.
“In 2025, we plan to invest 5.8 billion RON [USD 1.35 billion] in exploration and production, with nearly half allocated to onshore operations — while also advancing offshore Neptun Deep, a strategic project that requires large-scale investment,” OMV Petrom executive board member for exploration and production Cristian Hubati said.
“We continue to invest in order to contain the natural decline in production from mature fields and to pursue new near-field opportunities in proximity to our existing operations.”
OMV Petrom is the largest integrated energy producer in Southeastern Europe, with annual Group hydrocarbon production of about 40 million boe in 2024. It operates a 4.5 million-tonne-per-year refinery and an 860-MW gas-fired power plant. The company has a retail network of around 780 filling stations across Romania and neighbouring countries, under the OMV and Petrom brands.
